GULFSTREAM IV/IV-SP BUSINESS-JET AIRCRAFT NOW CLEARED FOR ONBOARD ULTRA-HIGH-SPEED INTERNET
Federal Aviation Administration Issues Supplemental Type Certificate, Increasing Availability of Broad Band Multi-Link™ Installations for In-Service Fleet
SAVANNAH, Ga., March 16, 2006 – Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), announces that the Gulfstream IV (GIV), Gulfstream IV-SP (GIV-SP), Gulfstream G400 (G400) and Gulfstream G300 (G300) business jet models now can be retrofitted with Gulfstream’s ultra-high-speed Broad Band Multi-Link™ (BBML) data system.
“The Broad Band Multi-Link system, the fastest in-flight connectivity available today, is an essential option for customers’ whose cabins are used as airborne offices,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president, programs, engineering and test, Gulfstream. “Ten times faster than the most widely used in-flight system, Gulfstream BBML is as fast as most ground-based services in U.S. corporations.”
With the ultra-high-speed BBML data system, in-flight passengers can surf the Internet, send and receive email, monitor the stock market or perform any other Web-based task, at the same speed found in most corporate offices.
With this new multiple Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), comes a BBML enhancement – Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability. The VoIP upgrade, which is more economical than traditional in-cabin voice systems, also provides significantly clearer sound quality.
While talking over the VoIP telephone, a nominal fee of $.10 per minute is added to the $2.50 per-minute SKYLink SM service fee charged for onboard BBML. The system’s usage fee remains constant, regardless of the number of passengers accessing BBML simultaneously – whether passengers are on the Internet or emailing.
Gulfstream received this latest multiple STC from the Federal Aviation Administration in January. Gulfstream holds three similar STCs, which enable the company to install the BBML system on G450/350, G550/G500 and GV business jets; however, these earlier STCs do not include VoIP capability. Gulfstream expects to receive follow-on amendments to the G450/G350, G550/G500 and GV STCs in the third quarter of this year, bringing VoIP capability to these models as well. Gulfstream received its first STC for a BBML installation in October 2004, which allowed the company to install the system on a GIV for evaluation purposes.
As of the end of February, the Gulfstream BBML has been installed in nine G550s, six G450s, one GV and two GIVs, and more than 20 more systems are under contract.
Gulfstream’s BBML system employs the SKYLink SM by ARINC Direct SM broadband satellite service. BBML uses a dedicated satellite bandwidth. The system, which offers data speeds of up to 3.5 megabits per second, comprises a dish antenna mounted under the tail radome of the aircraft, an antenna control unit, a transceiver router and Gulfstream’s exclusive advanced cabin server.
