More Than 200 Gulfstream Business Jets Flying With "Proven" Enhanced Vision System
Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System™ In Service for More than Four Years
SAVANNAH, Ga., Feb. 20, 2006 - At the end of 2005 and in service for more than four years, the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System™ (EVS) is operating on 213 in-service Gulfstream business-jet aircraft.
"The Gulfstream EVS is a proven navigational safety system," said Pres Henne, senior vice president, programs, engineering and test, Gulfstream. "We knew four years ago that this was a revolutionary system and decided then to seamlessly integrate it into the flight decks of our new aircraft models. The EVS-generated images can be viewed by using the HUD or, for a larger view, on two of the four PlaneView ® display units."
Gulfstream EVS has become the industry standard for all of the vision-enhancing systems that have followed. The system incorporates a specially designed forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot’s Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD). EVS allows the pilot to see through the indistinguishable gray and black images normally seen out the cockpit at night or during inclement weather. With EVS, pilots can clearly see a mountain range, a communications tower, a runway and any aircraft or vehicles on taxiways, even on the darkest nights.
EVS is standard equipment on the ultra-long-range G550 and long-range G450; 92 of which had been delivered by year-end 2005. EVS also is available as optional equipment on new G500 and G350 aircraft and as a retrofit on GV, GIV/GIV-SP, G400 and G300 business jets. To date, Gulfstream has retrofitted EVS into a total of 118 customer aircraft, including G500s, GVs, GIV-SPs, G400s, G350s and G300s. In addition to in-service customer aircraft, three Gulfstream test and experimental aircraft – a G450, a G550 and a GV – are equipped with EVS.
The first EVS was installed on an in-service Air Force C-37A aircraft in May 2002. "C-37A" is the Air Force designation for the Gulfstream V business jet.
In 2004, the Gulfstream EVS was the only vision-enhancing system of its kind certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). That year, the FAA validated a Part 91 rule change that allows pilots to use "enhanced flight visibility systems" to determine flight visibility, thus paving the way for all vision-enhancing systems to follow. This landmark ruling acknowledged that certain enhanced vision systems, such as the Gulfstream EVS, are adequate for the pilot to "see" down to an altitude of 100 feet above the elevation of the runway’s touchdown zone. Later in the year, the FAA bestowed on Gulfstream one of two 2004 "Excellence in Aviation Research" awards for the development of the Gulfstream EVS.
Certified by the Federal Aviation Administration Sept. 14, 2001 , Gulfstream EVS was developed in cooperation with Kollsman, Inc., which working with Gulfstream, continues to provide maintenance and service support to operators of EVS-equipped aircraft.
