GULFSTREAM G550 SETS 22nd CITY-PAIR SPEED RECORD FLYING FROM MILAN TO BEIJING
The Ultra-Long-Range Business Jet Flies From Italy ’s Fashion Center to China ’s Industrial Capital In Less Than 9 ½ Hours
SAVANNAH, Ga., Dec. 20, 2005 -- A Gulfstream G550 business jet recently established a city-pair record between Milan, Italy, and Beijing, China – flying the 4,550-nautical-mile route in just under 9 ½ hours. Once the record is officially recognized by the National Aeronautic Association, it will mark the 10 th city-pair speed record for the G550 this year and the 22 nd city-pair speed record for the ultra-long-range aircraft since it first entered service in September 2003.
The G550 took off from Milan Malpensa Airport at 2:53 p.m. local time on Dec. 12. It flew 4,552 nautical miles, landing 9 hours, 26 minutes later at Beijing Capital International Airport at 12:19 a.m. local time the next day. The G550 was flown at an average airspeed of .85 Mach and experienced a 23-knot average tailwind.
Four crew members flew the G550. Larry Mueller, senior international captain, was pilot-in-command, while Tony Briotta, international captain, served as second-in-command and Roy Wellington, international captain, was relief pilot. Flight Attendant Kim Buckelew managed the cabin. There were four passengers on board for the trip.
Through the end of September 2005, Gulfstream had delivered 66 G550 business jets. On Oct. 17, 2005 , Gulfstream announced it had commenced initial-phase manufacturing of the 100 th G550. That aircraft is scheduled to receive its Certificate of Airworthiness from the Federal Aviation Administration in the first quarter of 2006 and to be delivered to its owner, NetJets International, in mid-2006.
