GULFSTREAM RECEIVES FAA APPROVAL TO UPGRADE EGPWS WITH RUNWAY
AWARENESS AND ADVISORY SYSTEM ON MORE THAN 20
DIFFERENT BUSINESS JETS
All Gulfstream and General Dynamics Aviation Services
Service Centers are Ready to Begin Installations
SAVANNAH, Ga., July 26, 2004 Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to install the Honeywell Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) on aircraft with the Honeywell MkV Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) installed.
All Gulfstream and General Dynamics Aviation Services service centers are ready to begin installations, according to Larry Flynn, president, product support, Gulfstream, and president, General Dynamics Aviation Services.
In addition to Gulfstreams product line -- G100, G200, G300, G400, GIV/GIV-SP and GV, (G500 and G550 available in the fourth quarter of 2005), our FAA-issued Supplemental Type Certificate enables us to perform the RAAS installation on more than 20 different business-jet aircraft models, including Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna, Challenger, Falcon, Hawker, and Learjet.
Both Gulfstream and General Dynamics Aviation Services are wholly owned subsidiaries of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).
Developed by Honeywell to supplement its EGPWS, RAAS is designed to curb runway incursions and improve airport safety. The system uses information from both GPS - to determine an airplanes location on the runway - and an FAA-approved database of airport information that includes existing taxiway and runway boundaries. RAAS improves a pilots situational awareness by providing a verbal advisory - in either a male or female voice - that includes runway identification, runway length available and time elapsed when waiting for take-off clearance from the control tower.
Incidents of runway incursion continue to top the list of business-jet incidents reported to the National Transportation and Safety Board, Flynn added. While RAAS cannot warn the crew of equipment on the runway, it does provide the runway identification - alerting them that they are approaching a different runway than what they have been assigned - a runway that may be closed or occupied by other aircraft.
Gulfstream has been at the forefront in developing new systems that enhance pilot situational awareness during the most critical phases of flight - take-off and landing. The Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS), which incorporates a specially designed forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilots Head-Up Display (HUD), enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding areas in conditions of limited visibility. Certified by the FAA Sept. 14, 2001, the EVS has been installed on more than 100 Gulfstream aircraft.
While our EVS is compatible only with Gulfstream aircraft, we are pleased to offer RAAS - another outstanding safety-enhancing system - to owners and operators of our competitors aircraft, Flynn said. We sought out this Supplemental Type Certificate because its the right thing to do for our customers. Its the right thing to do for our industry and its the right thing to do for our company.
The combined effect of EVS and RAAS on a Gulfstream aircraft adds an even greater level of safety in the cockpit, according to Flynn. Some runway incursions - like moving ground-support equipment or aircraft attempting a landing - may become visible too late to be avoided. For crews operating both systems while attempting an approach in low visibility, EVS allows them to a get a visual of the runway and the RAAS verifies that the runway they are approaching is the correct one.
Gulfstream Service Centers are located in Long Beach, Calif.; Dallas; Appleton, Wis.; Savannah, Ga.; Brunswick, Ga.; and London-Luton in England. General Dynamics Aviation Services operates service centers in Las Vegas; Dallas; Minneapolis; Westfield, Mass.; and West Palm Beach, Fla.
