GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE FOR INSTALLATION ON ALL GIV AIRCRAFT
Vision-enhancing Technology Fully Integrated with Honeywell SPZ 8000 Avionics
SAVANNAH, Ga., March 30, 2004 – Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), now offers the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS) to owners and operators of large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV aircraft outfitted with Honeywell SPZ 8000 avionics.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently granted Gulfstream an amendment to an earlier Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) that now enables all aircraft within the 500-aircraft GIV/GIV-SP fleet to have Gulfstream EVS incorporated into their flight systems.
"We listened to our GIV owners and have given them what they want and what they deserve – the ability to outfit their aircraft with the most technologically advanced enhanced flight vision system available today," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "The outstanding safety benefits of this system have been recognized by commercial and military pilots. Like EGPWS (Enhanced Ground-Proximity Warning System) and TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System), EVS is destined to become a 'must-have' in every business jet cockpit."
The FAA first certified Gulfstream EVS in September 2001 for the Gulfstream V, the world's first large-cabin, ultra-long-range business jet. Developed in cooperation with Kollsman Inc., EVS incorporates a specially designed forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD). The Gulfstream EVS also is the only system that features a cryogenically cooled detector, which provides an unmatched level of sensitivity in identifying runway lights during approach.
EVS, which addresses many of the issues raised in the FAA's Safer Skies Agenda, enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding areas in conditions of limited visibility. The system also helps crews avoid runway incursion and hazards that would otherwise not be easily visible.
With more than 80 Gulfstream EVS in service, it's not just customers who have taken notice of the system. Gulfstream EVS has been recognized for its significant contributions to enhancing aviation safety by the Fédération Aeronautíque Internationale and has garnered a Honeywell Bendix Safety Trophy.
This year, the FAA validated the safety benefits of the Gulfstream EVS in a Part 91 rule change that allows pilots to use "enhanced flight visibility systems" to determine flight visibility. The landmark regulation acknowledges that certain enhanced vision systems are adequate for the pilot to "see" down to an altitude of 100 feet above the elevation of the runway's touchdown zone.
Available as a retrofit on GIV, GIV-SP, G300, G400, G500 and GV aircraft, the Gulfstream EVS can be installed at the company's Long Beach, Calif.; Dallas; Appleton, Wis.; Brunswick, Ga.; and Savannah Service Centers. EVS installations, which take approximately 20 days, can be completed concurrently with scheduled service and maintenance.
Gulfstream EVS is standard equipment on the company's newest business jets – the large-cabin, long-range G450 and the large-cabin, ultra-long-range G550.
