GULFSTREAM G550 ESTABLISHES RECORD FLIGHT TO COMMEMORATE KUWAIT AIRWAYS GOLDEN JUBILEE
Ultra-long-range Business Jet Flies Nonstop from New York to Kuwait
SAVANNAH, Ga., Jan. 17, 2004 - To commemorate Kuwait Airways 50th Golden Jubilee anniversary, Gulfstream established a city-pair speed record between New York City and Kuwait City with its newest ultra-long-range business jet, the Gulfstream G550. The route between these two cities is flown daily by Kuwait Airways.
"With this flight, we recognize Kuwait Airways' 50 years of business excellence and our partnership with the airline over the past 26 years. We share its business philosophy of providing the finest service and comfort to passengers while continuing to rank safety as one of our highest priorities," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream, who was a passenger onboard the flight. "From its first GII in the late 1970s to the three GV aircraft it operates today, Kuwait Airways has remained a valued customer. We congratulate them on their well earned golden jubilee."
The record-setting flight commenced at 4:51 p.m. EST on January 16, taking off from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City. The G550 flew nonstop for 10 hours, 56 minutes at an average airspeed of .85 Mach, touching down at Kuwait International Airport at 11:47 a.m. local time on January 17. The record flight covered 5,757 nautical miles at an average ground speed of 527 knots. The flight included personnel from both companies. Gulfstream captain Hank Gibson and co-captain Ray Wellington demonstrated the aircraft capabilities to Kuwait Airways captains Nasser Al Ojairi and Ahmed Al Anevi. Gulfstream flight attendant consultant Marianne Pruner worked with Kuwait Airways flight attendant Hamad Al Ameer, attending to the pilots and two passengers.
Gulfstream will provide all flight data to the National Aeronautical Association, which will officially record the flight within the category of Speed Over a Recognized Course.
Certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) just five months ago, the G550 has already set numerous city-pair speed records. In October, the G550 set four city-pair speed records during a five-day, around-the-world journey, which culminated in a nonstop 14 ½-hour flight between Seoul, South Korea, and Orlando, Fla. In November, the G550 set another city-pair speed record, flying nonstop from Tokyo to West Palm Beach, Fla., in 12 hours, 32 minutes. In December, the G550 set three additional city-pair records, including a 6,554-nautical-mile flight from Savannah, Ga., to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, that broke a distance record of 6,132 nautical miles set by a Gulfstream V in 1997.
Introduced in October 2002, the G550 comes fully equipped and includes the state-of-the-art PlaneView™ flight deck, Head-Up Display and FAA-certified Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS). The flagship of the Gulfstream business jet fleet, the G550 can accommodate up to 18 passengers, fly at a maximum speed of .885 Mach and cruise at a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet. Owners of the G550 can choose from multiple cabin layouts and several customer-preferred option packages. Customers can also choose to customize the interior to best meet their individual needs.
