GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM™ (EVS) IS OPERATIONAL ON GULFSTREAM IV-SP® BUSINESS JET AIRCRAFT
Customers Order Gulfstream EVS on Long-Range Business Jets
SAVANNAH, Ga., May 16, 2003 - Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), announces that its Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS) has been installed and is operational on a large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV-SP® business jet.
"Gulfstream V® pilots who fly with the Gulfstream EVS have found it as indispensable in the cockpit as other safety systems like TCAS (traffic alert and collision-avoidance system) and EGPWS," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "Their overwhelmingly positive response led to our decision to also offer the Gulfstream EVS on our large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV-SP business jet."
Two companies that recently ordered EVS for their new GIV-SP business jets are PrimeJet LLC and Northrop Grumman.
David Duke, president and chief operating officer, PrimeJet, said, "By having EVS on our GIV-SP, our passengers can have the additional security of knowing that safety isn't just the way we do business, it is our highest priority."
PrimeJet LLC, a charter jet company based in Van Nuys, Calif., took delivery of its GIV-SP equipped with EVS in March.
"As an 'on demand' business, we fly our clients at a moment's notice to airports around the world," said Duke. "EVS gives our pilots an added level of safety when they have a night approach to an airport they may not be familiar with. It is one of the best aviation safety advancements since EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning system)."
In July 2002, Northrop Grumman was the first customer to order the EVS for a GIV-SP. The defense-related systems corporation allowed Gulfstream to use its EVS-equipped aircraft for the purpose of attaining FAA certification of the GIV-compatible EVS. Northrop Grumman, which takes delivery of the GIV-SP later this month, plans to use the jet to transport its personnel and, in periods of excess capacity, offer it for use on the charter market.
The Gulfstream EVS is still the only one of its kind certified by the FAA and in operation on a business jet aircraft. It is available as standard equipment on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G550® business jet aircraft.
Of the current 40-system Gulfstream EVS backlog, half of the systems have been ordered for the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream V® (GV) aircraft and half have been ordered for GIV/GIV-SP aircraft.
The Gulfstream EVS incorporates a specially designed forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD). Developed in cooperation with Kollsman Inc., the system addresses many of the issues raised in the FAA's Safer Skies Agenda. The system enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding conditions. The Gulfstream EVS also helps crews avoid runway incursion and hazards that would otherwise not be easily visible.
To date, the Gulfstream EVS has been installed on 34 large-cabin, ultra-long-range GV aircraft since the system was first certified in October 2001. Following integration with Gulfstream's large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV-SP Honeywell SPZ8400 flight deck, the EVS was first installed on the Northrop Grumman-owned GIV-SP in August 2002 and, four months later, the Gulfstream EVS was certified for use on the GIV-SP by the FAA.
To date, FlightSafety International, provider of aviation training throughout the world, has trained more than 175 pilots on the Gulfstream EVS.
