GULFSTREAM V COMPLETES ULTRA-LONG-RANGE FLIGHT
Business Jet Covers Four Continents in One Day
SAVANNAH, Ga., Oct. 28, 2002 - An ultra-long-range Gulfstream V (GV) business jet aircraft completed an international flight that covered four continents in a 22-hour period. The GV, serial number 517, was manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), and is owned by G5 Executive AG, a Zurich-based private jet charter company.
The GV took off with five passengers from Washington D.C. on Sept. 11 and flew nonstop to Moscow, where the passengers disembarked. The aircraft continued its journey to Zurich where it refueled and a new flight crew boarded for the next leg. From Zurich, the aircraft flew nonstop to Denver where new passengers boarded the following day. In all, the GV covered 10,334 miles in 21 hours, 52 minutes, an average speed of .83 Mach.
"Our reputation is based on how reliably, quickly and comfortably we can transport people to distant cities," said Peter Fried, G5 Executive’s chairman and chief executive officer. "The GV meets our expectations with its outstanding performance and it meets our customers’ in-cabin needs in terms of comfort and functionality. It serves our business well."
The first and most successful ultra-long-range, large-cabin business jet aircraft, the GV entered service in 1997. Powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines, the GV has a nonstop range of 6,500 nautical miles. It cruises at speeds of up to Mach .885 and at altitudes of up to 51,000 feet, well above commercial traffic. Capable of accommodating up to 19 passengers, most GV customers outfit their aircraft to seat between 13-15 passengers. The GV was the 1997 recipient of the prestigious Collier Trophy, awarded by the National Aeronautics Association.
Since entering service in 1997, the GV fleet has logged nearly 190,000 flight hours, 89,000 landings and has achieved a dispatch reliability rate in excess of 99 percent. The GV also serves the U.S. Air Force and presidential fleet under the C-37A designation.
