GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE TO HIGHLIGHT MILITARY AND SPECIAL MISSION AIRCRAFT AT FARNBOROUGH SHOW
Gulfstream Business Jets Prove to be Ideal Platforms for Varied Military Missions
WASHINGTON, June 26, 2002 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics' (NYSE: GD), will feature its military and special mission aircraft capabilities at the Farnborough International 2002 exhibition, in Farnborough, England, July 22 through July 28.
Gulfstream, which produces the most technologically advanced business jets in the world, has been the choice of governments around the world for more than four decades. Today, more than 30 world governments and agencies depend on the proven capabilities of Gulfstream aircraft. The spacious interiors, robust airframes, exceptional flight envelopes and short-field takeoff and landing capability have made Gulfstream the ideal aircraft for unique and highly demanding missions. To date, more than 145 aircraft have been modified for special mission use.
"Farnborough is the perfect venue to demonstrate why Gulfstream aircraft have become the choice for executive transport, scientific research, maritime reconnaissance, patrols, search and rescue, medical evacuation and special electronic missions," said Bill Boisture, president, Gulfstream. "With the introduction last year of two new aircraft to our fleet, the Gulfstream 100 and Gulfstream 200, we expect to see significant interest in all our aircraft - all of which feature multi-mission capabilities."
At the Farnborough air show, Gulfstream will display two aircraft that have been adapted for special missions - the Gulfstream 100 (G100) and the Gulfstream V (GV). Currently, the G100 is used for executive transport, as an air ambulance and for specialized target towing.
The G100's maneuverability, maximum speed of .875 Mach, maximum cruise altitude of 45,000 feet and robust design combine to make it the only aircraft of its size capable of carrying the wing-mounted accessories required for target towing.
The GV's ultra-long range of 6,500 nautical miles; maximum altitude of 51,000 feet; and maximum speed of .885 Mach have enabled it to perform a variety of missions. Currently, the GV serves as an air-medical evacuation plane; a search and rescue platform; a high-altitude instrumented platform for environmental research; a special electronic mission aircraft and an executive transport for U.S. military commanders in chief. The GV also forms part of the president of the United States executive transport fleet.
A U.S. Air Force C37-A, the military designation for the GV, recently became the first in-service aircraft in the world to be equipped with the FAA-certified Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS). The EVS, which was designed and developed by Gulfstream, makes a significant contribution to improving a pilot's situational awareness both in flight during poor visibility and on airport taxiways, thereby directly addressing a number of the concerns listed in the FAA's Safer Skies initiative.
"At business aviation conventions and air shows, we regularly demonstrate why Gulfstream business jets have become essential business tools," said Boisture. "At Farnborough, we're proud to demonstrate how all our aircraft support special mission activities throughout the world, as well as help researchers make new discoveries to help enhance our environment."
